The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has been busy in 2026 rolling out changes that directly affect OFWs in Europe. Here's what kababayans need to know — from new digital services to enhanced welfare programs across the continent.

📱 DMW Goes Digital: What's New

In May 2026, the DMW unveiled a suite of human-centred digital innovations designed using design-thinking methodology. The goal? Make government services easier to access for OFWs — whether you're in Malta, Italy, or anywhere else in Europe.

What this means for you:

  • Online services hub — PEOS (Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar), E-Registration, and OFW Records access are now streamlined through dmw.gov.ph/online-services
  • Faster processing — Digitisation means less paperwork, fewer embassy visits, and quicker turnaround for contract verification and OEC processing
  • Mobile-friendly access — The new platforms are designed to work on phones, which is crucial for OFWs who may not have easy access to a computer

For European OFWs, this is a big deal. Many processes that previously required in-person visits to POLO (Philippine Overseas Labor Office) can now be handled remotely.

🇪🇺 Welfare Coordinators Trained in Hungary

In January 2026, the DMW partnered with the Philippine Embassy in Hungary to train 47 welfare coordinators — both Hungarian and Filipino — to provide aftercare and frontline assistance to Filipino workers across Central Europe.

The training included role-playing exercises on how to handle common problems OFWs face abroad, from contract disputes to emergency situations. This is part of a broader push to strengthen the welfare network for OFWs in regions where Philippine government presence is limited.

🇮🇹 Italy Opens 500,000+ Work Visas (2026–2028)

Italy has announced plans to issue up to 500,000 work visas over the 2026–2028 period for non-EU workers. Key sectors include agriculture, hospitality, construction, and caregiving — all fields where many Filipinos already work.

For OFWs considering a move or a country switch within Europe, Italy is shaping up to be a major opportunity. The Italian government has been reforming its immigration pathways to address labour shortages, and Filipinos are well-positioned given the existing community networks in the country.

🛡️ Strengthened Gender-Responsive Policies

The DMW has also strengthened its gender-responsive policies and services for OFWs, announced in early 2026. This includes better protection mechanisms for women OFWs, enhanced support for victims of abuse, and improved coordination with host countries on gender-sensitive case handling.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, all Philippine embassies and consulates in Europe have gender-sensitive desks and can connect OFWs with local support services.

📌 What European OFWs Should Do Now

  1. Register or update your OFW record at dmw.gov.ph/online-services — even if you're already abroad
  2. Keep your embassy contact details handy — find your nearest Philippine embassy in our Embassy Directory
  3. Watch for Italy's visa quotas — if you have family back home looking to work in Europe, the 2026–2028 window is worth tracking
  4. Stay connected with OWWA — the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration continues to offer programs, loans, and support even while you're abroad
